Habits and Behaviors That’ll Undermine Others’ Respect for You

A relationship is a two-way street, and so is respect, a fundamental aspect and foundation of relationships. If you don’t respect the people around you or show them any consideration, then be prepared for their respect for you to wear down! Dishonesty, tardiness, and more are all common habits and behaviors that you might be knowingly or unknowingly doing that might be chipping away at how others think of you!

Not Being Mindful of Oneself and Lacking Self-Awareness

Being self-aware affects oneself and greatly influences one’s relationship with other people. When one understands and is mindful of oneself, one can better understand others, communicate more effectively, and, in hindsight, avoid unnecessary arguments and conflicts. Lastly, many don’t know that self-awareness is a crucial aspect of respect that allows a person to clearly understand their likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses, and motivations and emotions.

Repeatedly Taking Over People

Interrupting someone when they are speaking is one of the main things that make people lose respect for you. After all, if you don’t respect someone enough to let them finish what they’re trying to say, why would others respect you in return? Regardless of your intent, the moment you interrupt someone speaking, it makes them feel as if they’ve been dismissed or disrespected by you.

Lying and Deceiving Others

Nothing about lying or deception is good. In fact, even lying by omission is considered to have a direct negative impact on the trust and respect we have in relationships. No matter what you do or what situation you’re in, always remember the common saying, “Honesty is the best policy!”

Showing a Lack of Consideration for Others’ Time

Time is a finite resource, and people—especially people you work with—expect you to be punctual and respectful of their time. If you’re constantly late to things, you’ll often find yourself facing the brunt of others’ frustrations and anger. However, you have no right to be angry or upset because you’ve just disrespected them by being late and not being considerate of their time.

Engaging in Bullying and Other Oppressive Behaviors

Bullying is an act that has no ounce or trace of respect whatsoever. When a bully oppresses someone, they’re disregarding someone’s worth as a person. In the same way, when others find out you’re a bully or have been a bully before, it’s almost automatic for them to lose their trust and respect for you. Trust us; they’ll start seeing you in a completely different—often negative—light!

Bailing on Others and Failing to Follow Through on Promises and Commitments

Failing to keep one’s promises often results in a lack of trust between two people. However, when it keeps happening, it can also lead to a loss of respect for the person who keeps bailing. Respect and trust go hand in hand, and breaking a promise and failing to follow through on commitments repeatedly can make these two things crumble.

Wrongfully Crediting Oneself for the Work of Others

Many things can cause your colleagues to lose respect for you in the office. However, one of the worst and easiest ways to do it is if you wrongfully take credit for someone else’s work. Workplace Ethics Advice says, “The person who wrongfully takes the credit shows disrespect to the employee who did the work. The wrongdoer exhibits a lack of integrity because of the unprincipled behavior.”

Falling to Take Responsibility for One’s Actions

Mistakes happen, and no one should be afraid of taking ownership of what they did wrong. However, some people are too cowardly to face their mistakes, leading them to fail to take responsibility for their actions. It may be hard to be accountable for some things, but remember that it’s what makes you a person with honesty and integrity. A public speaker and author, Georgia Murch, said, “Accountability breeds respect; a lack of it, contempt.”

Constantly Complaining About Something

When someone is dissatisfied with something, one of the most common things they do is complain. However, while it may seem harmless on the outside, too much complaining can annoy others around you and even lead you down the path of a mental illness. Remember, complaining will never do anyone any good; it’ll never solve your problems! Instead of complaining and complaining and complaining, try to find viable solutions that would improve the overall situation.

Brushing off Constructive Criticism and Feedback

Criticism for the sake of criticism will never do anyone any good, and it’s okay to ignore these kinds of negativities. However, it’s totally different when you receive constructive criticism or feedback from friends, colleagues, or superiors. When you completely ignore them and close off your ears to these things, you’re being dismissive and disrespectful of the help they’re trying to offer you. In the long run, the tables can turn, leading to these people losing any ounce of respect they have left for you; in a workplace, this can then cause a serious loss of productivity!

Belittling Others’ Emotions, Experiences, and Insights

When you belittle someone, you’re making them feel worthless and dismissed; you’re not respecting them in the slightest. So, if you’re someone who does this, how can you expect others to treat you differently? Belittling is a very destructive act that emotionally abuses another, and if you do this intentionally, you’ll compel others to lose their trust and respect for you.

Restoring to Manipulative Tactics

Any form of relationship—romantic or platonic—demands trust, understanding, and mutual respect. However, if you’re manipulating someone to get what you want, these values are in no way present in your relationship. Global English Editing explains, “Respect for our feelings, our decisions, our boundaries, and our individuality. When someone tries to manipulate or control us, they’re essentially disrespecting these fundamental aspects of our being.”

Propagating Rumors and Engaging in Excessive Gossiping

Gossip can be exciting, and while many people want to listen in on it, it doesn’t necessarily mean they trust the person spreading the rumors. In fact, gossipers are usually viewed as people who shouldn’t be trusted or respected by others; they are also seen as people who have no influence over others.

Badmouthing or Speaking Ill of Others Behind Closed Doors

Another act closely linked to gossiping is talking negatively about others behind their backs. Why must you destroy an innocent person’s character in front of others? Is it for personal gain or the need for power and control? Additionally, if you talk behind people’s backs, you show you’re not brave enough to say the same things to their faces.

Showing Bias and Acting With Prejudice and Judgment

Displaying fairness and equality in all aspects of life allows you to earn others’ respect. However, if you do the opposite and view things with prejudice, then you should expect the opposite to happen to you, too. Constantly judging others, especially because of personal biases, can cause others to view you differently, eventually leading to a loss of trust.

Overlooking and Ignoring Others’ Input

Man is a social animal, and we cannot thrive and succeed without others’ help. So, if you’re arrogant and constantly overlook and ignore others’ input, you disregard and disrespect their worth and value as people. Respect is supposed to be mutual, and if you don’t respect others enough to at least listen to their insights and input, you don’t deserve their respect either!

Being Insensitive and Apathetic

Trust and respect are two sides of the same coin. So, if you lack the empathy to consider others’ emotions and be compassionate toward their experiences and thoughts, then you are showing a disregard for them as a whole. Additionally, since respect can only be gained through mutual understanding and consideration, being apathetic toward others can harm how one views and respects you.

Seeking Relationships With Married or Taken Individuals

When you chase after married people or those who are already taken, you not just disrespect them and their partners, you’re also disrespecting yourself! You should love yourself enough to realize that cheating or anything remotely associated with it is not the way to go. If you continue down this path, you’ll slowly realize that the people around you are losing their respect for you, too, because of your uncouth actions.

Revealing a Lack of Courtesy, Etiquette, and Manners

In any social situation, we must display courtesy and good manners, including being polite, considerate, and mindful of how we affect others. If we fail to do so, we can make others feel uncomfortable and disrespected, which can inevitably lead to others losing respect for us, too.
