19 Things All Christians Should Avoid to Live a Godly Life

Walking the way of Christ is paved with both challenges and rewards. However, it can be easy to fall into temptation, especially when you aren’t aware that what you’re walking into is a sin. Substance abuse, pornography, vices, and pride are just some of the things that you should avoid if you’re a Christian. To help you better understand these things, we’ve created a list that’ll help you on your journey to becoming closer to God.

Substance Abuse

For Christians, God should be our one and only God, and we should not follow anything other than him. Substance abuse or the use of drugs and alcohol means going against one of His Ten Commandments. Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa published an excerpt from Biblical Counseling by Chuck Smith and noted that the hold addictions have on people is, in a way, demonic. For him, it’s also why many are dying slowly.

Vices

Getting addicted to one’s vices, like smoking and gambling, is a form of idolatry. This goes against the teachings of the church because it makes people turn away from the first commandment of God. The first commandment goes, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.” When you get pulled down the rabbit hole of addiction, it’ll feel like you’re being controlled by the addiction that you see as your new god.

Same-Sex Relationships

Marriage is a holy union of a man and woman ordained by God. So, going against His plans destabilizes life for the couple involved in the marriage and children. A study concludes, “Homosexual relationships do not provide the stable family structure that God intended for children and that children must have in order to thrive in their environments.”

Abortion

Though more and more countries are legalizing abortion, the Catholic Church stands by its intolerance of the deed. It totally forbids abortion, even if it would be necessary to save the life of the mother. The only time the Catholic Church can forgive the act is if the abortion happens as an indirect or unintended consequence of saving the mother during her pregnancy or birth.

Exclusion of Non-Christians

Christ’s teachings are all rooted in love, and excluding non-Christians because of their belief—or non-belief—goes against His teachings. Christianity doesn’t push non-believers away. Instead, it tries to make them see how full of love and light the way of Christ is.

Judgment of Others

If God Himself does not judge, then who are we to judge others? Matthew 7:1-6 goes, “Judge not, that you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.” There is great hypocrisy that comes with judging others’ sins because we, too, are sinners in our own way.

Hiding One’s Convictions

It’s easy to feel the need to hide your beliefs, especially in today’s world, where religion is being attacked left and right. However, when you face this kind of situation, remember the passage from 2 Corinthians 6:14, which goes, “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers.” This doesn’t mean to avoid non-Christians; it simply means that Christians should not form an alliance with non-believers that could lead to spiritual disaster. For Paul, it’s not right for Christians to hide their beliefs and isolate themselves from society because doing so means forsaking the life that God has gifted them.

Having a Biased View of Sins

The Catholic Church teaches the world about venial or minor sins and mortal or serious sins. However, this doesn’t mean that minor sins are allowed or forgivable. After all, one should never take the Bible at face value; it can take only one incorrect interpretation of a sin to lead one to destruction.

Ignoring the Poor

All men—rich or poor—are made in the image and likeness of God, and therefore, to ignore the poor is to ignore God, too. Deuteronomy 15:11 reads, “There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore, I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land.” The American Journal of Biblical Theology states that one of God’s desires is to end suffering and injustice, and because poverty is primarily caused by society’s unjust structures and processes, one must never ignore the poor.

Politicizing Jesus and Religion

Jesus is the Son of God, and even during His time on Earth, He never directly influenced a political party or government. He is part of the Kingdom of God, and He is the bigger picture. John 18:36 reads, “My kingdom is no part of this world,” and Jesus said this directly to one worldly politician.

High-Pressure Dating

It’s easy to believe you’ve found love in the first person you encounter or date. However, it’s important to remember that you should never settle. God will always bring you the right person at the right time and circumstances. The person God will place in your life is someone who will help you become closer to Him, so never settle for less—especially if you’ve only started getting to know them.

Unforgiveness

God is forgiveness, and God is love. If humans don’t learn to forgive, how can we confidently face God and accept His love? According to the Center for Christian Ethics at Baylor University, we should forgive for three reasons: for the sake of Christ, for the sake of others, and for the sake of ourselves. Forgiveness is never a weakness; it will only strengthen our connection with God.

Pride

Pride is one of the seven deadly sins that Pope Gregory the Great enumerated in the sixth century. Aside from this, pride is viewed as the original sin from which all other sins stem. C.S. Lewis noted that pride is the “essential vice” or the “utmost evil.” He also said that pride is the “complete anti-God state of mind” because instead of being selfless and humble, a prideful person can be overly narcissistic and selfish.

Lukewarmness

Lukewarm Christianity is the same as being neutral. This means one refuses to take a stand on moral issues, even if their religion is being attacked. However, lukewarmness is not something Jesus wants us to have. In Revelation 3:15-16, Jesus said, “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.”

Immorality

Immortality goes against the very core of being human. After all, one will only achieve everlasting life in the Kingdom of God in Heaven—not here on Earth. In a way, asking for immortality is being greedy, and greed is “improper of God’s holy people,” as stated in Ephesians 5:3.

Adding Rules to Scripture

Though the Bible should not be taken literally, it doesn’t mean that man can freely add or subtract from the word of God. This is highlighted in many different passages of the Bible, like Deuteronomy 4:2, which reads, “Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the Lord your God that I give you.” Another example is Proverbs 30:6, which reads, “Do not add to His words, or He will rebuke you and prove you a liar.”

Complaining About the Worship Service

According to Bible.org, complaints didn’t exist before sin entered the world. Adam and Eve never complained about anything—what they were forbidden to eat, their lack of clothing, and God’s other commands. It was only when Satan’s temptations entered their world that they started to get discontent with God’s plan. Given this, as the Mountain Ridge Church put it, “Our complaints ruin our worship; it takes our grateful hearts and erases our gratefulness, leaving us with a complaining heart.”

Segregating Sunday

It’s been ingrained in our culture to go with the flow or the status quo. However, by doing so, we slowly contribute to Sunday being the most segregated day. We each go about our routines and go to our churches and never realize that we never interact with others. Instead, we must explore other Christian communities and learn from Christians outside our circle.

Dressing Modestly for Fear of Lust

We are called to dress modestly in the church not because of the fear of lust but because of our respect for God. However, the problem is that today, modesty is weaponized. Therefore, it might be time to confront men about their sins and immorality instead of blaming women and asking them to adjust for the other.
